Why algae?

Algae are one of the most abundant and primitive organisms on planet earth. Over millions of years they have developed impressive mechanisms to adapt to extreme conditions through the creation of unique active molecules.

A source of active molecules

Algae combat the environmental stress that occurs in aquatic environments by harnessing a set of biomolecules produced within their cells.

Studies are being carried out into potential uses for biomolecules in different fields, including cosmetics and dermatology, for which Montibello has pioneered their application in bringing benefits to skin and hair.

Sustainability

The great regenerative power of algae is highly-beneficial for the planet: they are the largest source of nutrients in aquatic ecosystems and absorb large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. In short, they are our greatest allies in combating climate change.

That’s why we use algae as biofactories to produce natural, vegan active ingredients in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly manner.

Algae can be cultivated in bioreactors with very high yield and consumption of very few resources. Unlike land plants, algae do not require large cultivation areas, they have a small water footprint and generate very little waste.
